NC Governor to Expand Virtual Casinos Online

In the 1990s, the North Carolina- based Cherokee Native American tribe signed a compact with the state’s then governor to legalize virtual online casino gambling machines.

This led to the establishment of the Harrah’s Casino in the North Carolina mountains, which has steadily generated, even with only virtual casino gambling offered, more than $150 million annually for the tribe. This revenue has paid for improvements to the reservations, plus about $6,000 monthly for each of the tribe’s members.

However, the Cherokees have decided that they want to move beyond virtual online casino gambling machines, and introduce real cards and live Las Vegas- style games. The members of the tribe see a great deal of opportunity in a new, expanded casino. Bringing in more than virtual online casino gambling machines, they say, would draw many more tourists and create new jobs for the region.

Principal Chief Michell Hicks is currently engaged in meetings with Gov. Mike Easley about the tribe’s desire to expand beyond virtual online casino gambling. After a meeting on Wednesday, Hicks commented that, “We had a very good meeting with the governor’s staff. There are still a few things to work out. We hope to see positive changes in Cherokee by the spring.” Governor Easley’s office had no comment.
